Mitchell Anthony Abide passed away in Covington, Louisiana on February 10, 2010, one month before his 89th birthday. A memorial service and Catholic Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greenville on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. with a reception to follow. Visitation will be held at the church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lake Village, under the direction of Bishop Funeral Home.
Mr. Abide was born in Greenville, Mississippi, on March 10, 1921 to Melham and Bonda Abide. He was the sixth of nine children. He graduated from Greenville High School and LSU where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. During World War II, he served as an Army Air Corp navigator in the Pacific Theater. With his brothers Paul and George, Mr. Abide founded Abide Lumber Company. He also worked as an engineer at U.S. Gypsum until retirement. He enjoyed golfing every day, particularly with his Wednesday afternoon group.
Mr. Abide was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Patricia, who died ten days earlier. He is survived by two sons, Peter Abide and wife Judy of Biloxi, Ms, and Mitch Abide and wife, Jane of Covington, LA; two daughters, Leah Whann and husband, Sandy of New Orleans, and Mary Negus and husband, Brian, of Chattanooga, TN and eleven grandchildren.
